Highlights of Greece | Mykonos

Mykonos is an island of Greece in the Aegean Sea, most commonly known for its summer party atmosphere.  As I work on board a cruise ship and was only docked on the island for short periods, I know very little about the party scene of the island.  My time in Mykonos consisted of sight-seeing, eating and relaxing on the beautiful beaches.  Here are a few things to include during your stay on the island:20161005_111526

  • Venture Up Into a Windmill – Likely the most commonly recognized shot of the island of Mykonos is the five windmills which line the coast of the capital town Hora.  The windmills provide a perfect photo opportunity, so get your cameras ready!  Also, for a small “donation” you can venture up a staircase into the top portion of one and gaze out at the town through a small window.
  • Visit the Mascot of Mykonos –  In 1954, a local fisherman found a pelican after a storm, nursed him and named him Petros.  Petros became a
companion of the locals and since his passing, has been replaced time and time again with new pelican friends!  The pelican mascot hangs out around the waterfront cafes near the windmills.

  • Relax Along the Beach – Those looking for the party can find it at Paradise or Super Paradise Beach.  Many crew members reside to these areas for a little break from work, which they access by bus from the port area.  For the leisurely type, there are many beaches all along the island, so just walk around until you find one you like!
